What is Considered a Dental Emergency?

June 20, 2015 by Dr. Cannariato1

Any dental emergency should not be ignored. An injury to the teeth or gums can be serious and if left untreated, can cause permanent damage. If you do not seek dental care immediately, you risk extensive dental treatment, which can also be quite costly.

Dental Emergency Symptoms

A dental emergency that requires immediate care may include any of the following symptoms:

  • Swelling – Urgent Care Needed (Contact a dentist or go to the ER right away)
  • Severe Pain
  • Ongoing Tissue Bleeding
  • Severe Infection or Abscess

If you are not experiencing any of the above symptoms and have broken a tooth, lost a filling or crown or dislodged a tooth, contact South Tampa Smiles to make a dental appointment as quickly as possible.

Home Care

Here are a few tips you can do at home prior to your appointment to help alleviate your symptoms:

Pain:
  • Mild, warm salt water solution several times a day
  • Over-the-counter pain relievers such as Tylenol or Advil as needed
  • Apply cold compress to the outside of your mouth as needed
Bleeding:
  • Apply gauze to the area until the bleeding subsides
  • Bite on a moist tea bag
